Hangnails Are Annoying! Here’s How to Avoid Getting Them

Do you find those little pieces of skin around your nails annoying? You’re not alone! Hangnails can be pretty annoying and become even worse if you try to pick them. Picking or biting a hangnail can even leave a bruise or infect them, preventing you from applying those luxury press on nails you love so much or getting a manicure.

To help you with this, we have prepared a guide on hangnail causes and prevention. We have also discussed how to remove them without damaging your skin. Keep reading.

Moisturize Your Hands

After the pandemic, it has become a common practice to use hand sanitizer or wash your hands frequently. While these products are great at killing bacteria, they leave your hands dry, leading to hangnails. Always moisturize your hands and cuticles after washing them to keep them hydrated.

You can carry a hand cream with you and keep one on the bathroom sink for convenience. Another great way of getting healthy nails is to massage your nails and cuticles every night. You can use any thick cream or cuticle oil.

Besides soaps and sanitizers, many products cause your skin to dry out. You should wear gloves when washing dishes or doing laundry.

Do a Nail Soak

You can try soaking your nails in a rich oil if your hands are too dry and you get hangnails quite often. Here’s how to do it

  1. Soak some towels in hot water or microwave them.
  2. Pour rich oil, like coconut or jojoba oil, into a bowl and drench your nails in it.
  3. Wrap your hands in the hot towels you prepared for a few minutes.

Do this once a week to get soft, healthy, and hydrated nails.

Don’t Cut Your Cuticles

One mistake most people make is cutting their cuticles to get rid of a hangnail. Did you know that cuticles act as a protective barrier? So instead of cutting them, use a rich cream. Then use a soft pusher to push cuticles back and then carefully nip the dead pieces of skin (those are hangnails). This way, you can get rid of annoying hangnails without damaging the skin or nail plate.
